Frederick Keys News Release

On a cold and windy night in Frederick, MD, the Keys scored early and then followed their pitching to the finish line. RHP Ryan O'Shea allowed one run over 6.2 innings and LHP Chris Petrini tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief as Frederick won their third consecutive game. The Keys 5-1 win also ended a four-game winning streak for Salem. Frederick improved to 4-2 following the victory while Salem fell to 4-2 on the season.

LHP Drake Britton, the third-best prospect in the Boston organization, got the start for the Red Sox on Friday night. Britton was the opening day starter for Salem and surrendered seven runs, six earned, in just 2.1 innings of work. Friday night was not any better. In the second inning, Frederick scored three runs on Britton including a two-run double by SS Garabez Rosa. The following inning, he was pulled after not registering an out after facing four Keys. In all, Britton allowed five runs on five hits over 2+ innings of work.

Unlike Britton, O'Shea was extremely effective on Friday evening. The New Orleans native allowed one run on the night while striking out four and walking none. Over his 28 starts with Frederick in 2010, O'Shea had just two outings when he did not walk a batter. In addition, he finished the season with 64 walks, tops in the Carolina League. In his first two starts of the season, O'Shea has walked just one batter.

Promoted to Frederick on Thursday, Chris Petrini relieved O'Shea in the bottom of the seventh inning. Signed as a non-draft free agent in 2010 out of Cal-Berkeley, Petrini looked quite comfortable in his Carolina League debut. Over the final 2.1 innings of the game, he walked one, struck out one, surrendered one hit, and did not allow a run to score.

In the losing effort, the Salem bullpen continued to shine. RHP Tom Ebert and LHP Will Latimer combined to throw six scoreless innings of relief. On the season, Red Sox relievers have not allowed an earned run in 25 innings of work.

C Luis Bernardo, 1B Tyler Kolodny, and OF Brian Conley each had a RBI in the Frederick victory on Friday night.

Prior to Friday night's game, RHP Oliver Drake was promoted to Double-A Bowie and INF Bobby Stevens was promoted from Aberdeen.

Frederick (4-2) and Salem (4-2) will take the field for game two of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. RHP Pete Ruiz (0-0, 7.71) will start for Red Sox while the Keys starting pitcher is TBD.

Each fan to Saturday afternoon's game will receive a 2011-12 Keys Calendar presented by H.N. Funkhouser as well as a 2011 Keys magnet schedule brought to you by 123 Print.
