Charleston, SC. Veteran midfielder Stephen Armstrong returns to the Charleston Battery for the 2011 season. Armstrong's role with the Club will be expanded as he takes on assistant-coach responsibilities in addition to his playing role. This will be Armstrong's sixth season with the Battery; he has played 113 games (sixth all-time), scoring 24 goals (fifth all-time) and adding 11 assists (fifth all-time).
Stephen Armstrong joined Charleston in 2006 and was a member of the Battery's 2010 championship winning side. Armstrong also featured in the 2008 team that advanced to the final of US Soccer's national championship the Lamar Hunt U.S. Op-en Cup.
"Stephen brings us a wealth of experience on and off the field; he has been an important part of the club for the past six years. This experience will be more beneficially this season as Stephen has assumed the role of player/assistant along with keeping his high level of play on the field" Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser commented.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa Armstrong, 5-10, 165lbs., 34 yrs., played four years in Major League Soccer with DC United, the Kansas City Wizards and the Columbus Crew. Prior to turning pro Armstrong was a four-year starter at Butler University.
