Chico Outlaws News Release
(Yuma, AZ. February 3, 2011) The Arizona Winter League, the premier instructional league for professional and aspiring pro players, announced today that Knuckleball Princess Eri Yoshida has been tabbed to start for the Yuma Scorpions as they take on the Saskatchewan Silver Sox in minor league action at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma at 5:30 tomorrow (Saturday) night. Yoshida is back for her second stint in the AWL as she hopes to duplicate the success that she had last year that catapulted her to a summer pro contract with the Chico Outlaws. She became the first female to pitch in a men's professional league in over a decade resulting in her jersey and bat being collected and displayed by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Yoshida, 18, 5-1, 110 lbs joins almost 200 other professional free agents in the Arizona Winter League that saw over 60 players acquired by pro teams last year. With players from 6 countries and all 50 states in the U.S. it is larger than any major league spring training in terms of number of players. After her success of last season, Yoshida hopes to be impressive enough to catch the attention of a major league organization this year and to be given an opportunity to begin a climb of the minor league ladder to a big league career. The Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and Arizona Diamondbacks have all confirmed they will be scouting her at the Arizona Winter League already with more teams to schedule visits as well during the month long instructional league.
