Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (7-27) returned to the Dome to take on the Mississippi Surge (19-10) for the ninth time this season. The 'Gators came into the night on a 16 game losing streak. The streak began on December 9 against the Surge. And the streak continued after the IceGators fell short against the Surge again tonight, 5-2.
The opening period of the game saw the Surge take four of the first five shots on goal but Scott Darling (LOU), IceGators goalie, saved all of the shots. The 'Gators quickly responded getting the next six of seven shots on goal. With 11:26 left in the period, Eric Tallent (LOU) was called for tripping and put the Surge on a power play. Less than 30 seconds later Matt Zultek (MIS) gathered a rebounded shot by Adam Bartholomy (MIS) and scored the first goal of the game putting the Surge up 1-0.
The 'Gators struggles continued in the second period. Eight seconds into the period, Jason Cassells (MIS) scored his 12th goal of the season. About 20 seconds later Eric Tallent (LOU) was called for slashing. Once again the Surge went on a power play and just like the first power play Zultek scored and put the Surge up 3-0. Twelve seconds later Zultek capped off the hat trick when he scored his 25th goal of the season. With 11 seconds left in the second period, the 'Gators finally got on the board when CJ Tozzo (LOU) scored his fifth goal of the season.
The third period started with the 'Gators trailing 4-1 and needing to strike in a hurry. Beau McLaughlin (LOU) scored his 20th goal of the season 3:26 into the final period and cut the Surge lead to 4-2. But the 'Gators attack would stall going down the stretch. In fact, the Surge increased their lead back to three goals when Rob Campbell (MIS) scored his first goal of the season with 3:56 left in the game. Campbell's goal put the Surge up 5-2.
"We just didn't show up tonight," stated an angry IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after lose. "If we are going to stop this losing streak we have to come to play every minute of every game."
The 'Gators return to action on Friday, January 14th, against Columbus and will be wearing special theme night jerseys sponsored by Coushatta Casino Resort. After the game fans are encouraged to join the players and dance team at WOW for a chance to bid on the players' jerseys. The IceGators will then return to the Dome on Saturday to take on the Cottonmouths of Columbus again at 7:05.
