Vipers + Versus = Victory at 2011 NBA D-League Showcase

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS, Jan. 12, 2011 - The colors inside the South Padre Island Convention Centre are mostly light and airy, with soft pinks and yellows mixing in with delicate greens and blues.

That changed Wednesday night, as Rio Grande Valley red engulfed the setting for the 2011 NBA D-League Showcase. It was the perfect backdrop for a live broadcast on VERSUS, and even better for the hometown Vipers, who drew from the energy of the crowd en route to a 124-106 victory over the Erie BayHawks.

Jerel McNeal scored a game-high 27 points, and Jeff Adrien added 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Vipers, who out-rebounded the BayHawks 48-35, and shot 31-for-41 from the free throw line.

"This is a really great group of fans we have," said Adrien, who was acquired by the Vipers in a trade with Erie on Dec. 30. "They've really embraced me, and they really get behind us."

Richard Roby also had 27 points, while Mustafa Shakur added 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Vipers, who won their sixth-straight game to improve to 13-7.

Ivan Johnson led Erie (14-7) with 25 points. Tasmin Mitchell added 20 points. It was a rough night for former Viper Garrett Temple, who was traded to Erie in exchange for Adrien. He finished with five points on 2-for-11 shooting, though he did have eight rebounds and five assists.

Both teams concluded their stay at the Showcase. Erie takes the court again Friday against Maine. Rio Grande Valley doesn't play again until Tuesday against Maine.
