Potomac Nationals News Release

(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals' furious comeback stalled on a play at the plate in the ninth inning on a day when Yunesky Maya started in Woodbridge, and the Winston-Salem Dash won the series with a dramatic 9-8 victory.

Jose Lozada was tagged out at home on a pitch that caromed off the backstop to Dash catcher Jason Bour, who flipped to a covering Tyson Corley. The P-Nats had scored four in the eighth and plated one in the ninth, but the fortuitous hop squelched the rally and sent the Dash home winners. Curiously, the winning team in all three games in the entertaining series scored nine runs.

Potomac scored first in the game, and a pitch to the backstop was again a factor. Francisco Soriano doubled with one out and moved to third on a Chris Curran groundout. He sprinted home when Terry Doyle hurled his eighth wild pitch of the season.

Maya, the Cuban defector, sailed through three innings. He showcased his wide array of offspeed pitches, and faced just two more than the minimum in the opening three frames. But he ran into major trouble in the fourth.

A leadoff walk to Jon Gilmore did not bode well for Maya, who allowed the first six Dash batters to reach in the fourth. An RBI double by Seth Loman got the scoring started for Winston-Salem; run-scoring singles by Drew Garcia, Kyle Shelton and Kenny Williams, Jr. preceded a sacrifice fly y Jose Martinez. When the dust settled in the fourth, the Dash led 5-0.

Seth Loman homered in the fifth to make it 6-1, bu the Nationals rallied in their half of the sixth. A leadoff walk to Tyler Moore was followed by a Bill Rhinehart single. Sean Rooney then singled to load the bases. After Jose Lozada struck out, Jamar Walton singled to right field to score one. Soriano then singled to run the tally to 6-3.

In the seventh, Winston-Salem scored a trio of runs. Garcia walked with one out and scored on a Jason Bour double. Kyle Shelton walked, and he and Bour scored when Greg Paiml tripled past Bill Rhinehart in right field.

After Potomac scored four in the eighth, they came to the ninth trailing by a pair. Sean Rooney ignited the rally with a double, and was followed by singles from Lozada and Walton, which scored Rooney. Lozada tagged from second and moved to third on Soriano's fly-out to right to set up the game-ending drama.

With the win, Winston-Salem took the season series 12-8.

Wilmington defeated Lynchburg to move within a game and a half of Potomac and set up a dramatic three-game series in Woodbridge. The teams clash beginning Monday at 7:03 P.M.
