Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today (July 19, 2010) announced the signing of forward Matt Boyd to the team's roster for the 2010-11 CHL regular season. Boyd becomes the sixth signing announcement by the RiverKings during the off-season period and the fourth forward inked by the team.
The 25-year old native of St. Albert, Alberta comes to the RiverKings after a successful four-year collegiate career with the Green Knights of St. Norbert College in suburban Green Bay, Wisconsin. Prior to that, Boyd played four years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with Fort Saskatchewan and Camrose.
RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski feels Boyd brings a complete package to the ice. "Matt's a guy who has great leadership on and off the ice," Kaminski said. "He brings all the intangibles as a great two-way player. He is accountable and can play in all situations."
At St. Norbert's, Boyd rung up 31 goals and totaled 124 points over his 112-game career at the NCAA Division III school, an average of 1.11 points per game. His scoring touch was highlighted by a 17-goal season in his sophomore year, where he ended with 39 points in 32 appearances as a Green Knight, an average of 1.22 points per contest.
Boyd's career highlights at St. Norbert's included an NCAA Division III National Championship in 2008, when Boyd fashioned seven straight multi-point games. His team also finished second in the NCAA Division III National Tournament this past season as a senior. The Green Knights were 95-17-10 with Boyd on the roster.
Other college highlights for Boyd included scoring overtime game-winning goals on consecutive nights (January 11th-12th, 2008), finishing fourth all-time in assists with a career total of 84, reaching the 20 assist level in all four seasons of his St. Norbert career, and he was named Freshman of the Year after the 2006-07 season.
Known to score points in bunches, Boyd finished his college career with 35 multi-point games.
Boyd says he's looking forward to playing at the "next level." "I've heard a lot of good things about the CHL, the players and the cities, so I'm looking forward to it," Boyd said. "I think first and foremost, I need to do whatever it takes to make the team, and then do whatever I can to help the team win."
In the AJHL, Matt played in three seasons with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders, before moving on to Camrose, where he finished his third season and played his final year of junior hockey with the Kodiaks in 2005-06.
During his 2004-05 year, Matt's Camrose team finished the season losing only eight games and had 104 points in a 64-game schedule. They went on to win the Doyle Cup AJHL post-season championship and played in the RBC Bank Cup finals, losing to Weyburn in the championship game to determine Canadian Junior "A" hockey supremacy.
Finishing his final season (2005-06) in Camrose the following season, Boyd had his best year of his junior career, scoring twenty times for 46 points in 54 games, while adding six goals and 16 points in 16 playoff games for the Kodiaks. He finished second on the roster for goals and points, and led the team in assists and was named team MVP at the end of the season.
