Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today (July 15th, 2010) have announced the signing of center R.G. Flath to the team's roster for the 2010-11 CHL regular season. The Park City, Utah native is in his fourth professional hockey season, all in the Central Hockey League. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound center is the fifth announced signing for the RiverKings during the off-season and third forward signed by the team.
The 25 year old forward played last season with the Corpus Christi IceRays, scoring 11 goals for 24 points and 72 penalty minutes. Flath added 6 PIMS in two playoff games. Flath was acquired by the IceRays in a trade at the start of the season with Amarillo, who sent him to Corpus Christi last October for future considerations.
RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski sees Flath as providing an impact at both ends of the rink. "R.G. brings a great, relentless work ethic, character and a will to compete," Kaminski said. "He can play in either a second line or third line role. R.G. is very coachable and puts the team first. He's also a very responsible two-way centerman, who takes pride in his own zone, faceoffs, and the penalty kill."
In the 2008-09 campaign, Flath played in 38 games with the Rapid City Rush of the CHL, netting nine goals for 16 points and 41 penalty minutes.
During the 2007-08 season, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound skater started the season with Oklahoma City Blazers, where he played in ten games, scoring one goal, six points and 21 PIMS. He was later dealt to the Austin Ice Bats, where he finished the season with 19 goals, 37 points, and 84 PIMS in 47 contests. Flath also scored a goal and was tagged for eight PIMS in three playoff appearances for Austin that season. Flath's goals, assists, points, and penalty minutes with Austin were a professional season high water mark for him.
Flath says he's heard nothing but good things about the RiverKings and looks forward to playing for and not against them this season. "I think my style of play fits how coach Kaminski coaches and I think we're on the same page. I'm very physical, I can put the puck in the net and I work hard every shift."
Before the start of his professional career, Flath played in 52 games at the collegiate level with the Milwaukee School of Engineering, where his career numbers with the Raiders included 37 goals, 64 points, and 131 penalty minutes over two seasons. He finished the year in third place on the MSOE roster for goals scored in his freshman season, and was second on the team for goals scored in his sophomore season at the NCAA Division III school.
Flath played junior hockey in the North American Hockey League with the Soo Indians (Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan), where he scored 50 goals, 92 points, and received 272 penalty minutes over his four-year career.
