Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
A five-run eighth inning and Jonathan Albaladejo's record-tying save propelled the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees past the Pawtucket Red Sox Thursday.
The Yankees trailed 3-2 entering the eighth inning, but managed to tie the game on a Justin Christian single that scored Reid Gorecki.
With the bases loaded and one out, Eduardo Nunez hit a soft line drive to center that scored Reegie Corona and put the Yankees up 4-3.
After Jesus Montero worked a walk that scored a run, Jorge Vazquez lined a RBI-single to right to extend his season-high hitting streak to 12 games-tying Kevin Russo for the longest by a Yankee this season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added another run on a Rene Rivera sacrifice fly that put the team up 7-3.
The game looked to be out of reach for Pawtucket after a Greg Golson double in the top of the ninth put the Yankees up 8-3, but the Red Sox managed to cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the inning.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Niuman Romero took a 1-1 pitch from Yankees reliever Zack Segovia over the wall in right field for a three-run homerun.
Romero's homerun also chased Segovia from the game, making the Yankees turn to Albaladejo to close out the game.
Albaladejo needed just two pitches to get the final out and to pick up his 25th save of the year, tying Chuck Ricci for the most saves in a season by a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher.
The teams meet again Friday for the final game of the series. The Yankees are expected to call up right-handed pitcher David Phelps from Double-A Trenton to start the game, while the Red Sox will send Michael Bowden to the mound.
The 23-year-old Phelps was 6-0 with a 2.04 ERA, holding opponents to a .199 batting average and allowing just two homeruns in 14 starts.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
