Jr. Streetkings Summer and Fall Programs About to Start

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The "second season" of the Jr. StreetKings youth roller hockey program at the Hernando Civic Center covered rink facility in Hernando is about to get underway.

Following a successful spring season that ended June 19th, youngsters will be back on the "rink" learning about teamwork and sportsmanship, while also honing their skating skills under the tutilege of program director and RiverKings' defenseman Derek Landmesser.

The first event on the schedule will be a FREE summer camp where youngsters who have no prior skating experience can learn about in-line skating. The camp will begin this coming Tuesday, July 6th through Friday, July 9th at the Hernando Civic Center facility. Hours each day will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

During the week, participants will learn in-line skating and the basic fundamentals of hockey, which include skating, stickhandling, and basic rules of the game. Helmets, skates and sticks will be provided for participants to this camp, sponsored by the Maddox Foundation, based in Hernando. While the camps is free of charge, the number of participants will be limited, so registration as soon as possible is requested.

The second event on the summer schedule will be for those who already have knowledge of skating and will be geared toward more advanced hockey development. Dates for this camp will from Monday, July 12th, to Friday, July 16th. Hours are from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, also at the Hernando Civic Center facility.

Participants will go through drills, plays, work on conditioning, aimed at strengthening their skating skills. Stickhandling, passing and shooting skills will also addressed.

In addition to the hockey development, campers will have the opportunity to play soccer, baseball, and go swimming during the camp, and are asked to bring their own lunch and swimsuit along to take part in those activities.

The cost of this camp will be $100.00, payable to Hernando Youth Sports.

Fall league play in the Jr. StreetKings program will start the week of July 26th, which will consist of one weekly practice and 12 games for the teams who take part.
