GREENVILLE, SC - After 10 innings, the 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star ended in a 5-5 tie before 6,537 fans at Fluor Field in Greenville on Tuesday night. Crawdads Manager Bill Richardson, Pitching Coach Brad Holman, Hitting Coach Jason Hart, Athletic Trainer Jeff Bodenhamer and Strength and Conditioning Coach Ryan McNeal were at the helm of the Northern Division team.
Before the game, Crawdads CF Miguel Velazquez belted his way into the Home Run Derby finals with eight bombs in the preliminary round. He later fell to the derby winner Augusta 3B Chris Dominguez in the final round, held after the second inning of the game.
Velazquez also helped the Northern squad get on the board first in the top of the first against Southern starter LHP Chris Masters. Velazquez smacked a one-out single inside the third base line and trotted home on a two-run shot by Greensboro C Kyle Skipworth, making it 2-0 early.
Hickory LHP Robbie Ross started the game for the Northern team and struck out the side in the first inning, his only frame of work. All four Crawdads pitchers dealt a scoreless inning in the game, including LHP Robbie Erlin in the third, RHP Matt Thompson in the sixth and RHP Trevor Hurley in the seventh.
After the Southern squad struck for four in the second, the Northern team came back wit two in the third to tie it at 4-4. Both teams then exchanged a run in the fifth, before holding each other scoreless the rest of the way. The game went to one scoreless frame of extra innings before ending in the 5-5 tie.
