Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Barrie, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors season has come to a close after losing to the Barrie Colts 4-2 tonight at the Barrie Molson Centre. As a result the Barrie Colts are the recipients of the Bobby Orr Trophy, awarded to the Eastern Conference champions.
The Majors performance in the first period was certainly one they'd like to forget, producing only three shots on goal and trailing the Colts 3-0 after one. Mississauga responded with a strong second period and pulled to within one of Barrie, before the Colts closed the door in the third.
The opening period began slowly as it appeared both teams were content on sitting back and allowing the other to make the first mistake. The play picked up after a few minutes as neither team produced much offensively in the opening ten minutes. At 11:31 the Colts struck first. Captain Stefan Della Rovere took the puck from behind the Majors goal and skated out front and fired at JP Anderson, beating the goaltender with a wrister up high to make it 1-0. Just seconds later the Colts increased the lead by two. The Colts went to the net and created traffic in-front of JP Anderson. Dalton Prout got the puck on the point and fired a low driving shot on goal that was tipped in by Alex Hutchings and past Anderson to make it 2-0. Barrie continued to out chance Mississauga and improved the lead to 3-0 at 17:19 when Della Rovere was credited with his second of the game. Della Rovere fired a shot off the end board and it appeared to be tipped in but it was ruled a goal for the captain. One bright spot in the first period for Mississauga was killing off all three power play opportunities by Barrie.
JP Anderson was replaced with Chris Carrozzi to begin the second period for Mississauga. The Majors pulled themselves back into the game in the second period by out shooting the Colts and managed to grab two goals and cut the lead to within one heading into the final period. At 12:19, Devante Smith-Pelly scored on the power play for the Majors after a scramble in-front of goal. Cameron Gaunce dumped the puck in and it was mis-played by Mavric Parks. Parks then struggled to get back in net and Smith-Pelly took the pass and put it in. In the closing minute of the game Casey Cizikas was credited with the second Majors goal. David Corrente fired a wrist shot at Parks, who just got a piece of it but the puck bounced loose and Cizikas put it away before it could be cleared. The teams heading into the dressing room with a 3-2 score line in favour of Barrie.
Mississauga had their best chance to tie the game while on the power play early in the third period as Cameron Gaunce's shot rang off the cross bar and was cleared. Barrie restored their two goal lead at 4:26 courtesy of Luke Pither. The overager scored his eighth of the post season and that's all the Colts would need to win the game and the series. Mavric Parks made 20 saves and recorded the victory for Barrie. JP Anderson and Chris Carrozzi combined for 37 saves, the loss goes to Anderson.
Barrie now will await their opponent in the OHL Finals, as the Kitchener Rangers and Windsor Spitfires are still battling to determine the Western Conference representative.
Notes: The Colts make their first appearance in the OHL Finals in eight years. The Majors appearance in the conference finals marked the fifth time in seven seasons for Dave Cameron as coach of St. Mike's. Tonight's game also marked the final game in the OHL careers of three Majors: Dustin Ekelman, Blake Parlett, and T.J. Battani.
