Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Barrie, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors put up a valiant effort but fell 3-0 to the Barrie Colts in the opening game of the Eastern Conference Championship tonight at the Molson Centre. The Colts now take a 1-0 series lead in the best of seven series.

The Colts came into the game a perfect 8-0 in the post season and set the tone early in this one. Barrie found themselves on the power play a little over a minute into the game and capitalized on the opportunity. Alex Pietrangelo had the puck on the point and fired at the Mississauga goal and Matt Kennedy was there to re-direct it past Majors goaltender JP Anderson to make it 1-0 for Barrie. The Colts continued to take it to the Majors physically and carried the play for the first ten minutes. Mississauga settled down and began to match Barrie physically and created some chances. Neither team could add to the scoreline and the teams went into the dressing room with Barrie ahead by one.

The second period may not have provided any goals as both teams failed to convert their chances thanks in large part to solid goaltending. JP Anderson robbed Alexander Burmistrov with a pad save after the Colts broke out on a two-on-one. At the other end of the ice Mavric Parks made two big saves on Casey Cizikas and Riley Brace to keep the Majors off the score sheet. Mississauga's best chance of the period came on the power play when Corey Bureau's shot was deflected over the net by Parks. The second period ended much like the first with a 1-0 scoreline.

The Colts increased their lead by two at 4:59 of the third period when Matt Kennedy scored his second of the game. Burmistov's pass found Kennedy and the Carolina draft pick beat Anderson high on the blockerside to make it 2-0. Darren Archibald added an empty netter in the closing seconds making the final 3-0 for the Colts and giving them the lead in the series.

Mavric Parks made 29 saves to earn the shutout for Barrie. JP Anderson stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced in a losing effort. The Majors return home for game two of the series on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale through the Hershey Centre box office or the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1. Fans are encouraged to arrive early on Friday to avoid line-ups at the door.
