 Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX April 11, 2010- The Austin Toros hosted the Dakota Wizards Sunday afternoon for game three of the first round of the NBA D-League Playoffs at the Austin Convention Center, with the Toros advancing to the next round with a 102-90 win.
Dakota came out on fire during the first few minutes of the game, behind the efforts of Marcus Dove. The Toros fought back to gain the lead, and believed they were going to hold the lead going in to the second quarter, but Darren Cooper's shot at the buzzer tied the game at 25. Both on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, Alonzo Gee and Curtis Jerrells scored 15 of the Toros 25 points in the quarter.
Bad shots and miscommunication on passes kept both teams scoring to a minimum during the first few minutes of the second quarter. The Toros regrouped and were able to stretch their lead to as many as nine during the quarter. At intermission, the Toros held a small lead over the Wizards, 48-42.
Austin kept their five point lead after the third quarter as both teams scored 22. Curtis Withers' pair of free throws tied the game at 65 with 1:29 left in the period. Squeaky Johnson's three-point jumper extended the Toros lead back to five, 70-65.
Heading in to what would be one of the team's final 12 minutes of the season, the Toros were successful from beyond the arc while the Wizards put points on the board by scoring in the paint. Dakota's Lester Hudson cut the Toros lead down to one possession after hitting back-to-back long shots with 1:38 left. It was not enough as the Toros finished the game on a 12-0 run.
adidas player of the game Squeaky Johnson added a season-high 19 points off the bench. Jerrells led the Toros with 25 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Gee added 24 points and Eddie Basden notched a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds).
Lester Hudson led the Wizards with 21 points and seven rebounds. Corsley Edwards notched a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).
The Toros will face the winner of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Reno Bighorns series in round two next week. For ticket information call the Toros office at (512) 236-8333 or visit austintoros.com.
