Port Hueneme, CA - A milestone was reached on Friday night as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes won the 39,500th game in California League history. The Quakes beat the Inland Empire 66er's in extra innings 4-3. Had the Quakes not won in the tenth inning on Friday, the San Jose Giants would have taken the honor of winning the 39,500th game by beating the Modesto Nuts by the same score.
Going into Friday night's contests, Cal League teams had played 39,496 games. A game is not considered official until it is completed. Five games finished on Friday night but it was the fourth game to finish that was the landmark win. Out of the 5 games, 3 finished before 10:00 pm and the Rancho game was completed at 10:05 pm. San Jose defeated Modesto at 10:10 pm, becoming an official game just 5 minutes behind Rancho.
After a Rian Kiniry RBI single tied the game with two outs in the ninth, the Quakes picked up the winning run in the tenth, earning their first win of the year.
Dillon Baird's first hit in the California League was a memorable one fter going hitless in his first seven at-bats as a Quake, Baird's RBI double down the left-field line plated Roberto Lopez with the winning run.
Quakes' starter Scott Kazmir, was sharp through six innings, making a rehab appearance after landing on the ngels' disabled list with a strained hamstring. Kazmir, who started the evening on a 95-pitch limit, fanned six through six innings, but ran out of gas in the seventh. Three consecutive hits by the bottom third of the Inland Empire order put the 66ers on the board and chased Kazmir.
Cal League President, Charlie Blaney, stated "We knew that one team was going to take home the honor tonight and it was exciting to see which team was going to win-Â Blaney continued, "This is all a lead up to the 40,000th game which should come this July."Â
The countdown until the 40,000th game continues tonight and should take place sometime in July depending on rainouts and suspended games. The Cal League season started on Thursday, April 8 and finishes Labor Day, September 6.
