April 5, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears Professional Baseball Club in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks is proud to announce their Opening Day roster for the 2010 Southern League Championship Season which begins on Thursday, April 8 when the BayBears take on the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium.

Of the 25 men including one on the disabled list, 16 of this year's BayBear squad spent part or all of last season in Mobile. The starting rotation will consist of four returning members including 10-game winners Barry Enright and Matt Torra. Enright was the BayBears Pitcher of the Year in 2009 while Torra led the Southern League in complete games (4). Wes Roemer who joined the BayBears last May is also back as is lefty Tom Layne, a late addition to last year's ballclub. Newcomer Bryan Shaw, who pitched for Visalia last year, rounds out the rotation.

All but one member of the BayBears' bullpen is back this season. The only newbie is right-hander Bryan Henry, who posted a 3.15 ERA in 2009 for the Rawhide. Right-handers Reid Mahon, Kyler Newby, Abe Woody, Jeff Dietz and Roque Mercedes are all back as is left-hander Leyson Septimo. Both Mercedes and Septimo are on Arizona's 40-man roster.

Behind the plate for the BayBears this season will be Southern League All-Star Sean Coughlin. Coughlin returns from a broken right hand which he suffered in last year's All-Star Game. Also catching for the BayBears will be former Mississippi State backstop Ed Easley and Konrad Schmidt, who hit .304 at Visalia a year ago.

Along the infield for the BayBears are returners Bryan Byrne and Ricardo Sosa. Sosa paced the BayBears in home runs (12) and RBI (71) in 2009. Flanking them will be newcomers Taylor Harbin, Jake Elmore and Jake Wald. Wald is new to the D-backs' system after spending several years with San Francisco.

Returning BayBear Pete Clifford will start the campaign on the disabled list. When he returns, he'll be joined in the BayBears' outfield by Evan Frey, who stole 31 bases last season and Cyle Hankerd, who knocked in 67 runs. New to the BayBears' outfield are Ollie Linton and Collin Cowgill. Cowgill, a former Kentucky Wildcat, is one of Arizona's top 10 prospects according to Baseball America.

The BayBears' workout schedule for the next three days at Hank Aaron Stadium will be released shortly. A 2010 roster is attached. Numbers are subject to change.

The BayBears' home opener is on Wednesday, April 14 at Hank Aaron Stadium which will also feature the Grand Opening of the Hank Aaron Childhood Home & Museum with special Hall of Fame guests Hank Aaron, Bob Feller, Rickey Henderson, Bruce Sutter, Mobile's own Ozzie Smith and Willie Mays. The Boys & Girls Club Chorus will sing the National Anthem. Nathan Campbell from the Cody Road Boys & Girls Club and Alabama Youth of the Year will toss the ceremonial first pitch.
