Wenatchee Wild News Release
WENATCHEE, Wash. - Nolan Youngmun (Anchorage, Alaska) scored a pair of second-period goals and the Wenatchee Wild swept its divisional semifinal series against the Kenai River Brown Bears with a 3-1 victory Sunday night.
The Wild now advance to the divisional finals, where it will face either Fairbanks or Alaska. Fairbanks holds a 2-0 lead in the series and can punch its ticket to the divisional finals with a win in Game 3 on Friday.
Youngmun gave the Wild the lead nearly nine minutes into the second frame after a scoreless first period. The Wild entered the offensive zone and a 3-on-1 quickly developed. Youngmun carried the puck over the blue line down the left wing and charged to the net, beating Brown Bears netminder Josh Benton 5-hole on a backhander. Kyle Brodie (Northglenn, Col.) earned the lone assist. Youngmun struck for the second time in the period at the 15:31 mark. Shorthanded, Duncan McKellar (Phoenix, Ariz.) slid the puck into the near corner, but the puck took a strange bounce to Youngmun in front of the net, and he chipped the puck into the left side of the cage.
The Wild took a 3-goal lead 90 seconds into the third period on Eric Johnson's (Madison, Wis.) power-play goal. Positioned in front of the net, Johnson redirected Brodie's slap shot from the blue line into the top of the net. It was Brodie's second assist of the game. Brad Fusaro cut the Wild's lead to 3-1 with less than four minutes remaining in regulation when he tapped in a rebound, but the Brown Bears fell short down the stretch.
Brendan Jensen (El Granada, Calif.), making his first playoff start for the Wild, made 19 saves on 20 shots. Benton made 37 saves on 40 shots. The Wild went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Brown Bears were 0-for-4.
