ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Kevin Clare (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored with 1:13 remaining in regulation to bring the U.S. National Under-17 Team within a goal of the Youngstown Phantoms, but Team USA was unable to find the equalizer, falling, 3-2, here tonight.

Travis Boyd (Hopkins, Minn.) wasted little time in getting the U.S. on the board when he followed Dan Carlson's (Corcoran, Minn.) rebound on the left side, skated the puck to the high slot and wristed it past netminder Jordan Tibbett just 19 seconds into the game. U.S. goaltender Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) turned aside all 10 shots he faced in the opening frame to keep the Phantoms off the board.

Youngstown knotted the score with a power-play goal when Tom Serratore's low slapshot from the top of the left faceoff circle slid past McNeely at 14:06 of the second stanza. Team USA peppered the Youngstown net with 11 shots in the period, but was unable to solve Tibbett.

The Phantoms took the lead at 8:40 of the third period when Adam Berkle stripped a defenseman of the puck and fired a turnaround shot from inside the left faceoff circle that snuck past McNeely. Just 2:20 later, Andrew Lamont roofed a close-range shot from the left side to give Youngstown a 3-1 lead. With 1:13 remaining in regulation and with an extra attacker out for the U.S., Clare intercepted a Youngstown clearing attempt, skated to the center point and wired a wristshot over Tibbett's glove to cut the deficit in half. Clare nearly tied the game just seconds later, but his left-point blast was robbed by Tibbett, as was the ensuing rebound. Time ran out on the comeback bid, however, allowing the Phantoms to earn the 3-2 victory.

McNeely closed out the night with 22 saves.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will travel to Youngstown Saturday to take on the Phantoms at the Covelli Centre at 7:15 p.m. EST.
