WASILLA, Alaska - The Alaska Avalanche scored three second-period goals Tuesday night and went on to defeat the visiting Wenatchee Wild at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Arena, 5-2. The loss halted the Wild's 3-game winning streak and dropped its season record against Alaska to 7-3-1.
On the penalty kill, Zach Smith lifted the Avalanche to an early lead at the 8:41 mark of the first period when he collected an errant Wild pass at his blue line, skated alone down the left wing and scored on the breakaway chance. The Wild knotted the score, 1-1, with less than three minutes remaining in the period on an even strength goal by Andrew Christ (Spokane, Wash.) from the right faceoff circle, beating Alaska's Landon Peterson stick side. It was Christ's ninth goal and 18th point of the season. Jake Flynn (Wenatchee, Wash.) and Brandon Brossoit (Los Alamitos, Calif.) assisted.
Alaska took control of the game in the second period. Trent Johnson snuck a wrist shot past Wild goalie Brendan Jensen (El Granada, Calif.) from the left point a little over five minutes into the second frame. Daniel Hildebrandt made it 3-1 near the midpoint when he blasted in a slapper from the top of the left faceoff circle. Jed McGlasson scored the Avs' fourth goal of the contest with just 26 seconds remaining before the second intermission.
Duncan McKellar (Phoenix, Ariz.) cut Alaska's lead to 4-2 with less than two minutes left in the game when he scored from the slot after knocking down a loose puck that popped high into the air. Ryan Timar (Novi, Mich.) assisted. McGlasson put the game out of reach with an empty net goal with 49 seconds left in the game.
Wenatchee had a 44-21 advantage in shots and clanged the post twice. Peterson made 42 saves. For the Wild, Jensen made five saves on eight shots while Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced. Both teams struggled on the power play. Wenatchee went 0-for-6 while Alaska went 0-for-7.
The Wild will try to split its 2-game series against the Avalanche Wednesday night at 7 p.m. (AKST).
