West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The inaugural Free Beer and Hot Wings Morning Show "Wingstock" festival, presented by 97.9 WGRD in association with Blue Cap Entertainment, is set to fly into Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday, June 12. The Free Beer and Hot Wings event features an impressive lineup of four major label recording acts, including headliner Snoop Dogg along with Jackyl, Pop Evil and Richy Nix.
The first major outdoor concert event of the summer is a one-day festival on the field of Fifth Third Ballpark. Along with the four musical acts, fans can enjoy Wing Alley, with a variety of outside vendors offering their best flavors of chicken wings for sale.
Regent Broadcasting Vice President and General Manager Phil Catlett expects a day like no other seen in West Michigan. "Wingstock could be the event of the year for West Michigan, a great day of incredible music, fun, and food at Fifth Third Ballpark," Catlett said.
Jerry Tarrants, operations manager for Regent Broadcasting, concurs, saying "We wanted an event our listeners and all of Grand Rapids would remember - the diversity and caliber of talent on this bill will give us just that."
Snoop Dogg is a 12-time Grammy Award-nominated hip-hop rapper, record producer and actor. The iconic entertainer has 10 studio albums to his name, dating back to 1993 with the release of the quadruple platinum Doggystyle. His most recent album, Malice n Wonderland, was released last December. Seven of his albums have gone platinum with sales of more than a million. Five have reached the top of the Billboard R&B/ Hip Hop album charts and three have topped the Billboard Top 200 Album charts. In addition to his 10 solo studio albums, he has recorded five compilation albums and five collaboration albums, has appeared on four soundtracks and has three greatest hits albums. Snoop Dogg has a smooth, laid-back delivery with flavor-filled melodic rhyming with a simple, effective vocabulary.
Snoop Dogg is also known as a philanthropic activist in his home state of California. As the owner and coach of the Snoop Youth Football League, Snoop subsidizes approximately $2 million annually to create extra curricular activities for 2,500 California children who may not otherwise have them in the hopes of boosting their self esteem, learning about teamwork and preparing them to become tomorrow's leaders.
Jackyl shot out of Georgia in 1991 with its wild, untamed and uncouth approach to rock 'n' roll. Equal parts hard rock, heavy metal and Southern rock, Jackyl brought rock 'n' roll back to its down-to-earth, wild, fun-loving origins. With five studio albums, two compilations and two live albums to its credit, Jackyl is best known for its songs "Down On Me" and "The Lumberjack," which features a chainsaw solo by lead singer Jesse James Dupree. Jackyl is planning the release of its sixth studio album in 2010. The band is known for touring relentlessly and has consequently built a strong, devoted following. Jackyl broke the Guinness Book of World Records mark for most live performances in the shortest period, playing 100 performances in 50 days in 27 states in 1998.
Local rock-n-roll quintet Pop Evil formed in 2001 and earned support from 97.9 WGRD, which played the band's first single, 2005's "Somebody Like You." The single quickly became the most requested tune on WGRD. Pop Evil's relationship with WGRD earned the band its big break, when a major label radio promo representative visited WGRD in 2006 and was given a tape of Pop Evil. One year later, the band was signed to Pazzo Music and recorded their first full-length CD, "Lipstick on the Mirror," which was released in 2008. The album's first single, "100 in a 55," is an undeniable rock anthem that lit up the airwaves nationally and helped earn Pop Evil as one of iTunes' Top New Artists of 2008. The band spent the month of January in the studio recording their much-anticipated follow-up to "Lipstick on the Mirror," which is scheduled for a release later this year.
Twenty-four-year-old Richy Nix grew up on the Ontario side of the Detroit/Canada border and calls his style "hip hop-cropped alt-rock."His first single "In My Head," played locally on Detroit radio, earned him notice from Universal Republic Records, which signed him and released his signature song nationally in January 2010 to strong reviews. His "Note To Self EP" is set to be released on iTunes on March 23.
Dan McCrath, Vice President and Co-Owner of Blue Cap Entertainment, said he is looking forward to a great event.
"I'm excited about bringing in such a wide variety of acts that will appeal to a wide range of people in West Michigan, and bringing them to a facility that is a perfect host for such a good summer outdoor event," McCrath said. "The involvement of The Free Beer and Hot Wings Morning Show on WGRD to this Wingstock festival adds a whole new level of fun - it makes this event more than just a music concert by adding the festival elements of food, beverages, laughter and fun. We're really excited about June 12 and the kickoff of the first of what we hope to be many Wingstock events in West Michigan."
