Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-Former Stampede captain Ben Holmstrom has signed a two-year, two-way contract with the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers. He becomes the 11th former Stampede player to sign a contract with an NHL club.
The Colorado Springs, CO native has been assigned to the Flyers top affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms and will be in the lineup tonight when the Phantoms host the Hamilton Bulldogs at 6 PM (Central). He is expected to play on the same line as former teammate and Stampede star Andreas Nodl.
"It's always been my goal to play professional hockey," said Holmstrom from Glens Falls, NY. "I feel fortunate to be given the opportunity and I'm very excited to get going. It will be extra special to play alongside Nodl again and see a familiar face the locker room."
Holmstrom played with the Stampede from 2003 to 2006 and captained the Herd to a franchise best 43-13-4 record and first Anderson Cup championship. He also helped lead the Herd to their first ever Clark Cup Finals appearance. His younger brother, Josh, is a current member of the Stampede.
Holmstrom spent the last four years playing collegiate hockey at UMass-Lowell where he recorded 84 points (26g, 58a) in 144 career games. He served as captain for three of his four years with the River Hawks who were eliminated from the Hockey East playoffs last weekend by the Maine Black Bears in a best-of-three series.
Holmstrom will wear #23 tonight when the Phantoms face Hamilton, the top affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. Fans can listen to the game live by clicking here or you can watch the game by clicking here.
