Cheney's Attack Leads U.S. in Algarve Cup
The U.S. Women's National Team advances to Wednesday's Algarve Cup final, led by Boston Breakers 2010 first-round draft pick Lauren Cheney who notched 3 goals and 1 assist in the first three games.
Cheney posted her first goal of the annual Portuguese tournament last Wednesday in the opening round of play against Iceland. She scored the second goal for the U.S. following an own goal by Iceland, to record a 2-0 victory in the first day of action.
The U.S. moved on to face Norway on Friday in an exciting match to the last whistle. U.S. forward Abby Wambach scored two goals, including the game-winner coming off an assist from Cheney in the second minute of stoppage time for a 2-1 U.S. win.
Sitting on top of their group, the U.S. faced defending champion Sweden earlier today. Last year the U.S. fell to Sweden in penalty kicks of final. Today Cheney came on the field in the second half to replace Amy Rodriguez to notch two more goals, making her the leading scorer of the tournament for the U.S., as they advanced to the final with a 2-0 victory, topping their group with 9 points.
The U.S. will advance to their eight consecutive Algarve Cup final on Wednesday, March 3 at 11 a.m. against Germany. The Germans advance to the final after defeating Denmark 4-0, Finland 7-0, and China 5-0.
