Zephyrs Announce 2010 Coaching Staff

February 18, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) New Orleans Zephyrs

Metairie, LA - Edwin Rodriguez will return to manage the New Orleans Zephyrs in the 2010 season, the team announced today. Joining Rodriguez will be new hitting coach Greg Norton, as well as pitching coach Scott Mitchell and trainer Steve Miller, both returning from last season.

Rodriguez will be entering his seventh season in the Florida Marlins organization, and second as skipper of the Zephyrs, coming off a 63-80 campaign a year ago. Prior to New Orleans, Rodriguez, spent the two previous seasons (2007-08) as the manager of the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers in the South Atlantic League, and also had stints managing the Marlins' Gulf Coast League affiliate and a pair of Class A affiliates in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, where steered his club to the New York-Penn League championship in 1999. His career managerial record is 376-427 over nine seasons.

Norton is making his coaching debut, after ending his playing career with the Atlanta Braves in 2009. A career.249 hitter, Norton broke into the majors as a second round draft pick out of the University of Oklahoma by the Chicago White Sox in 1993, and also spent time with Colorado, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Seattle and Atlanta over 13 seasons. His 13 career pinch-hit home runs is tied for 11th on Major League Baseball's all-time list, and he ranked second among all active players in career pinch hits (96) and homers (13) at the time of his retirement.

Mitchell is entering his ninth season as a pitching coach in the Marlins organization, and third at the Triple-A level, also serving in that capacity for Albuquerque in 2006. After posting a 5.02 team ERA through the season's first two months last year, Mitchell's Zephyrs staff recorded a 3.97 ERA the rest of the way, finishing seventh in the PCL. A 22nd round pick of the Montreal Expos out of the University of the Pacific in 1995, Mitchell spent seven years in the Expos system before breaking into coaching in 2002.

In his ninth season in the Marlins organization, Miller returns to the Triple-A affiliate for the sixth straight year. His term with the Marlins began at Class A Kane County in 2002, and he worked his way up to Greensboro in 2003, Carolina in 2004, and Albuquerque in 2005. Miller served as the trainer for the Pacific Coast League in the 2007 Triple-A All-Star Game, and has also worked in the Arizona Fall League.

Opening Day is Thursday, April 8th when the Zephyrs face the Round Rock Express at 7:00 p.m. For more information or to purchase season ticket packages, call the Zephyrs at (504) 734-5155.
