Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze head coach Ernesto Purnsley announced the signing of former University of Utah quarterback Brett Elliott. Terms of the deal were not disclosed per team policy.
"Brett Elliott is a proven winner and will be a great addition to our team," Purnsley said. "Not only is he familiar with Salt Lake City and familiar with arena football, he is a fierce competitor and he knows what it takes to win championships."
Elliott played three years (one was a redshirt) at the University of Utah from 2000-03. As a sophomore he played in eight games - starting six - and threw 1,529 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He later transferred to Linfield College (Ore.) where he was a two-time Div. III First Team All-American for the Wildcats.
In two seasons Elliott (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) won 23 of the 24 games he started and led the Wildcats to the 2004 Div. III National Championship.
As a senior he threw for 4,019 yards and 49 touchdowns and was named the Gagliardi Trophy and Melberger Award, which signifies the most outstanding football player in Div. III.
For his career he threw for a school-record 8.614 yards and 110 touchdowns - 61 came in his junior year, which is a NCAA record for all divisions. He set at a total of 31 single-game, single-season and career school records with the Wildcats.
After a stellar college career, he signed a free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers for the NFL in 2006. He also played for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europa, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, and in 2008 he played for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League.
