The Orioles today announced that they have invited six non-roster players to their major league spring training camp.
Catchers LUIS BERNARDO and ADAM DONACHIE will be joined by infielders MIGUEL ABREU and BLAKE DAVIS, outfielder MATT ANGLE and infielder/outfielder JONATHAN TUCKER at major league spring training camp.
Of the six invitees, all but Donachie have spent their entire professional careers in the Orioles organization and two of the six (Davis and Tucker) have reached the Triple-A level.
Abreu, 25, was an Eastern League All-Star at Bowie in 2009 and led the Baysox in hits (142) and doubles (31). Abreu was selected in the 28th round of the 2005 First Year Player Draft out of East Central University in Oklahoma.
Angle, 24, was named to the 2009 Carolina League All-Star Team after batting.289 (138-478) and leading the Orioles organization with 40 stolen bases for Class-A Frederick. In seven games at Double-A Bowie, Angle batted.357 (10-28) and stole two bases. Angle's 148 hits, 84 runs scored and 42 stolen bases on the year led the Orioles organization. Angle was a seventh round selection in 2007 out of Ohio State University.
Bernardo, 22, batted.213 (54-253) in 82 games for Class-A Delmarva. He threw out 31 percent (37-121) of runners attempting to steal. A native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Bernardo was signed as a non-drafted free agent on November 23, 2005.
Davis, 26, began the 2009 season on the disabled list after a spring training ankle injury. Upon his return, he batted.320 (16-50) with one home run and five RBI in 13 games for Rookie-level Aberdeen before being transferred to Triple-A Norfolk for the remainder of the season. In 55 games for the Tides, Davis batted.211 (38-180) with one home run and 14 RBI. Davis was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 First Year Player Draft out of Cal State Fullerton.
Donachie, 25, was signed by the Orioles as a minor league free agent on November 25, 2008 after seven years in the Kansas City Royals organization. In 2009, Donachie batted.215 (59-275) with five home runs and 33 RBI in 88 games for Double-A Bowie.
Tucker, 26, was selected as an Eastern League All-Star after batting.265 (114-430) with one home run and 36 RBI in 120 games for Bowie. His 31 stolen bases led the club and were good for fifth in the league. After a promotion to Triple-A Norfolk, Tucker batted.348 (8-23) with four RBI and three stolen bases in seven games. Tucker was selected in the 20th round of the 2004 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida.
In order to make room for the addition of INF MIGUEL TEJADA to the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated RHP DENNIS SARFATE for assignment. Sarfate went 0-1 with a 5.09 ERA (23.0IP, 13ER) in 20 games for Baltimore in 2009. He spent most of the season on the disabled list with a circulatory condition in his right hand.
Orioles pitchers and catchers will hold their first workout in Sarasota on February 18, and the first full squad workout will take place February 23. The Orioles will open the 2010 Grapefruit League schedule at Ed Smith Stadium against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 3 at 1:05 p.m.
