Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks will recognize the life-saving work of northeast Iowa police, fire fighters, and emergency medical personnel by wearing special jerseys, which were unveiled Thursday afternoon at City Hall in Waterloo.

"This represents the historic pattern of partnership the Black Hawks have in Waterloo and the Cedar Valley," said Mayor Tim Hurley. "It means a lot to us that the Black Hawks call Waterloo their home."

Waterloo Police Chief Thomas Jennings, and Fire & Rescue Chief Doug Carter were also on hand for the announcement.

The uniforms, mostly black with red and white trim and white numbers, feature either the crest of the Waterloo Police Department or the emblem of Waterloo Fire and Rescue. By special permission of the United States Hockey League, half of the team will wear Police jerseys, with the other half in Fire and Rescue sweaters. Corporate support for the uniforms was provided by Tyson Fresh Meats of Waterloo. Following Saturday's game against the Des Moines Buccaneers, the jerseys will be auctioned, with profits benefitting the Honor Guards from each department.

"The Black Hawks are proud of this opportunity to do something for these hard-working emergency workers," said Black Hawks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Clint Rowe. "It takes a special kind of person to go into a burning building or protect innocent people from harm. We should all be thankful that a few dozen men and women in each department are looking out for all the rest of us."

The Honor Guards for the Police and Fire & Rescue Departments participate in ceremonies and represent their departments at formal city functions.

"Our Honor Guard operates on a virtually non-existent budget, so this means a lot to the men and women of the Waterloo Police Department," said Chief Jennings.

Chief Carter echoed those sentiments, saying, "The members of the Honor Guard donate all of their time and receive no compensation, other than the honor and pride of representing Waterloo Fire and Rescue. This makes us all proud, and it's an honor."

The Black Hawks game against the Des Moines Buccaneers at Young Arena begins at 7PM Saturday. In addition to the game-worn uniforms, country music star Dierks Bentley signed one of the Black Hawks Police jerseys when he visited the team last week. The sweater, bearing number "1", will also be part of the auction. For tickets, call the Black Hawks box office at (319) 291-7680.
