Recently retired Breakers midfielder Angela Hucles has been selected as a 2009 Humanitarian of the Year award winner, named by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States.Hucles has been active in philanthropic efforts throughout the year. She serves as a spokesperson and active supporter for America SCORES New England, a non-profit which provides soccer and creative writing programs after-school for 650 Boston inner-city youth, and reaches hundreds more during summers.
Hucles' service in the community has positively affected women and children from across the globe. She acts as an American Ambassador for the Brazilian chapter of Partners of the Americas and serves on both the Women's Sports Foundation advisory board and the Omega Institute's Women in Power Conference.
Hucles will be honored as the 2009 Humanitarian of the Year award winner this Thursday, November 19th at the America SCORES New England Middle School Voices event. As a recipient of the award, Hucles was given the opportunity to select a youth program to receive a donation from the U.S. Soccer Foundation. Hucles selected America SCORES New England and 300 Kwik Goal soccer balls will be donated to SCORES' Middle School poet-athletes in attendance.
Want to meet Angela Hucles? Join the Boston Breakers at the "Teaming up for the Community 1st Annual Food Drive" at Athletic Evolution in Woburn this Saturday, November 21st. All Breakers fans are encouraged to bring canned goods that will be donated directly to the Greater Boston Food Bank. Angela will be in attendance from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. The event also includes appearances from the New England Revolution, Boston Cannons, and the Boston Celtics, skills demonstrations for all sports, skills contests, prizes and raffles.
