ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) stopped all 20 shots he saw and Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) notched two points (1-1) as the U.S. National Under-18 Team blanked the Chicago Steel, 4-0, here today to earn a weekend sweep of United States Hockey League East Division leaders. All four of Team USA's goals came in the third period.
Despite out shooting the Steel 22-9 through the first two stanzas, Team USA had yet to solve netminder Nick Pisellini. Campbell stopped all nine shots he saw at the other end for Team USA to keep it scoreless after 40 minutes.
Bryan Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) opened the scoring for the U.S. 2:38 into the final frame when he jammed home Matthew Nieto's (Long Beach, Calif.) centering pass into the open goal from the right side. Just 1:19 later, Zucker found Justin Faulk (South St. Paul, Minn.) who crept in from the left point and slid a shot through Pisellini from inside the left faceoff circle to make it 2-0. At the 7:06 mark, Chase Balisy (Fullerton, Calif.) chipped in Austin Czarnik's (Washington, Mich.) rebound to give Team USA a three-goal lead. Zucker ended the offensive burst when his snap shot beat Pisellini over the blocker at 11:31 and Campbell turned aside the remaining 11 shots he faced to account for the 4-0 final.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to action Saturday (Nov. 21) when it meets defending USHL West Division champion Fargo Force at 7:05 p.m. EST at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
