Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have signed former Rockford RiverHawks right-handed pitcher Jose Mateo.
The hard-throwing reliever spent the entire 2009 season with Rockford where he was used primarily in short relief. He was 1-0 with a 3.45 ERA in 11 relief appearances through July before a couple bad outings as a starter hurt his ERA.
"Jose impressed us with his power arm last season," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "With him available as a free agent, I sent (Coach) Ralph (Santana) down to watch him in the winter leagues last weekend. With reports of him hitting 96 miles per hour down there last week, I thought him a potential great addition to our bullpen for this season."
In four professional seasons, Mateo is 10-9 with a 3.83 ERA. Prior to signing with Rockford last season, he spent three years with the St. Louis Cardinals organization where he advanced as high as advanced single-A Palm Beach.
