Mills played professionally for eight season, including four at the Major League level with the Montreal Expos (1980-83), and two years at Triple-A with the Denver Bears of the American Association in 1980 and 1981. Mills' name entered the record books on April 27th, 1983, when Nolan Ryan stuck out Mills for career strikeout 3,509, passing Walter Johnson for first place on baseball's all-time strikeout list.
After his tenure with the Sky Sox, Mills managed the Las Vegas 51s to a PCL Southern Division title in 2002 and served as bench coach of the Boston Red Sox during their two World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.
