MISSOULA, MT - The Orem Owlz had won plenty of baseball games without the long ball. On Friday, in Game 2 of the Pioneer League Championship Series, they flexed their muscles and hit six home runs to power past the Missoula Osprey, 10-0.
The Osprey also had no response for Orem starter Stephen Locke, who pitched a four-hit shutout. The left-hander walked one and struck out five while throwing just 106 pitches, helping keep the 3,033 fans at Ogren Park Allegiance Field quiet for much of the game.
The end result is a winner-take-all game for the Pioneer League Championship on Saturday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Orem is seeking their fourth title, while the Osprey will be trying to win its third championship.
Carlos Ramirez, who went 5-for-5 at the plate, hit two of the six roundtrippers, while Michael Wing, Kevin Ramos, Justin Bass and Casey Haerther adding home runs to the Orem attack. They scored eight of their 10 runs via the home run, and added four other extra-base hits in a 15-hit attack. Bass and Haerther had two hits each.
Ramon Castillo was the lone Osprey player to have a multi-hit game, collecting a single and a double. Bobby Stone and Bobby Borchering added base hits for Missoula.
The lack of offense did not help Osprey starter Mike Belfiore, who allowed five runs on eight hits in taking the loss. Chase Anderson surrendered four hits and two runs in 3 2/3 innings, while striking out five batters, and Eury De La Rosa gave up three runs in the 9th inning.
The Osprey and Owlz play for the title on Saturday, with right-hander Charles Brewer (0-1) getting the start for the Osprey. The Owlz will start right-hander Orangel Arenas, who will be making his first appearance in the post-season.
Tickets for Game 3 of the Championship Series are available at the Osprey Team Store at 412 W. Alder St., by phone at (406) 543-3300, or online at www.missoulaosprey.com.
