ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) registered two goals and an assist, while Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.) stopped all 15 shots he saw as the U.S. National Under-18 Team blanked the University of Waterloo (Ontario), 8-0, in its season opener here tonight.
Saad tallied Team USA's first goal of the season after he streaked past a defender on the right side, cut towards the net and squeezed a backhanded shot through netminder Keaton Hartigan just 1:33 into the opening frame. Justin Faulk (South St. Paul, Minn.) doubled the U.S. advantage after he one-timed Nick Shore's (Denver, Colo.) pass from the middle point for a power-play marker at 8:00. Team USA extended its lead to 3-0 when Bryan Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) stickhandled around the Waterloo defense and roofed a backhander into the upper-left corner for an unassisted marker. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) converted on Luke Moffatt's (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) rebound on the right side of the cage to make it 4-0 with just 1:30 remaining in the stanza.
After the second period went scoreless, Rust chipped a pass to Matt Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) who snapped it past Hartigan from the right side at 2:52 of the third frame. Bill Arnold (Needham, Mass.) made it 6-0 after he slipped a shot past Hartigan from the left faceoff dot. Saad and Stephen Johns (Wampum, Pa.) each tallied to round out the scoring for Team USA.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to action Thursday (Sept. 24) when it meets the Tri-City Storm at the 2009 United States Hockey League Fall Classic in Sioux City, Iowa.
