Coleman Named Cubs' Minor League Pitcher Of The Year

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Smokies RHP Casey Coleman was named by the Chicago Cubs late Monday as the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Coleman's honor coincided with Chicago naming Kyler Burke of the Low-A Peoria Chiefs as its' Minor League Player of the Year.

The award is the latest in a long line of accomplishments for Coleman this year. He was named to the mid-season Southern League North Division All-Star team back in June and was the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 29-July 5. Coleman tied for the Southern League lead in wins with 14.

Coleman has come up big for the Smokies throughout the year. Coleman's 5-2 record since the All-Star break included a key 3-1 win for Tennessee on September 1 vs. Mobile. Coleman's six-inning, one-run gem against the BayBears allowed the Smokies to hold a one-game lead on second-place West Tenn heading into their key showdown for the second-half title.

The 2009 season is Coleman's second in the minors. The Cape Coral, Fla. native went 4-3 with a 3.11 ERA in 13 games between Single-A Boise, Peoria and Daytona in 2008. Coleman was a 15th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft six starts.
