Lansing Lugnuts News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (21-24; 48-66) committed four costly errors that led to five unearned runs, three to tie the game in the eighth and two to lose the game in the tenth, as the Lansing Lugnuts (18-27; 44-70) triumped in extra innings, 8-6, on Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium.
The victory was Lansing's first of the season in 13 extra-innings games -- but it could not have come without the Silver Hawks' help.
With South Bend leading 6-3 with two outs in the eighth inning, Hawks shortstop Reynaldo Navarro's throwing error allowed Mark Sobolewski to score Lansing's fourth run and put Lugnuts runners at the corners. On reliever Daniel Vasquez's next pitch to Chris Emanuele, Kenny Wilson took off for second base on a steal attempt. Catcher Rossmel Perez's throw trickled into center field, bringing home Balbino Fuenmayor. Navarro compounded the problems for South Bend with a wild return throw to the plate, plating Wilson with the game-tying run.
In the tenth inning, Victor Capellan (0-2) walked Sobolewski to start the frame. Jon Talley dropped down a sacrifice bunt to Capellan, who juggled it before firing wildly down the right field line. Sobolewski scored the go-ahead run on the error while Talley raced to third base, where he would subsequently score on a Kenny Wilson RBI single.
Frank Gailey (2-2) earned the win with a perfect ninth inning while Matt Daly pitched around a single, a walk, and a pair of wild pitches to earn his 19th save with a scoreless tenth inning.
The 7-8-9 batters in the Lansing starting nine -- Talley, Balbino Fuenmayor, and Wilson -- each collected two base hits in the game while scoring five of the Lugnuts' eight runs.
The Lugnuts had entered their four-game series at South Bend having lost six games in a row, but have won the first two games of the set.
The two teams play the third game of their four-game series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., with Lansing right-hander Chase Lirette (3-3, 5.79) taking on South Bend right-hander Randy Rodriguez (4-8, 5.01).
