Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads fell to the West Virginia Power, 9-4, before 903 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday afternoon. LF Cristian Santana clubbed two home runs and drove in three RBIs in the contest.
Both starters -- RHP Wilfredo Boscan for the Crawdads and RHP Hunter Strickland (7-4) for the Power -- tossed four shutout innings to start the game, before they both allowed a solo home run in their respective halves of the fifth frame. 3B Jeremy Farrell began the top of the fifth for West Virginia with a solo shot to left, before Santana hit a solo homer for Hickory to start the bottom of the fifth and tie the game, 1-1.
RHP Cody Eppley (1-2) took over on the mound in the top of the sixth to relieve Boscan, who gave up just the one run on four hits with six strikeouts in his start. The Power (21-18, 48-61) moved in front with an unearned run in the sixth, an earned tally in the seventh and two more in the eighth on a homer by C Tommy Sanchez to make it 5-1.
The Crawdads (21-21, 54-57) chipped the deficit down to three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on three straight two-out singles against RHP Ryan Kelly. DH Jared Bolden extended the inning with a base hit and took third on a 1B Erik Morrison single. DH Eric Fry then drove Bolden in with an RBI single to right field, extending his RBI streak to four straight games and making it 5-2.
After West Virginia struck for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to move ahead, 9-2, the Crawdads attempted a bottom of the ninth comeback. 3B Matt West was hit by the inning's first pitch from RHP Wilson Ortiz to start the frame. Santana then crushed another one over the left field wall for a two-run homer, cutting the Power lead down to five runs. Ortiz, though, settled down and was able to navigate through the rest of the inning with no further damage done, closing the 9-4 win for the Power. Eppley was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while Strickland earned the win for West Virginia.
