Hudson Valley Holds Off Lake Monsters 2-1 On Monday At Centennial

July 6, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) - Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT ---Hudson Valley pounded out six doubles on Monday night, but it was two double plays turned in the final two innings that secured a 2-1 New York-Penn League victory for the Renegades over the Vermont Lake Monsters at historic Centennial Field.

The Renegades clung to a 2-1 lead when the Lake Monsters loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but reliever Richard De Los Santos deflected a ground ball from pinch hitter Dan Killian right to shortstop Tyler Bortnick who stepped on second and threw to first for the inning-ending double play.

Then in the ninth with a Vermont runner on first with one out, De Los Santos induced a groundball back to the mound from J.J. Sferra and turned it into a game-ending double play to give Hudson Valley its second straight win over the Lake Monsters.

For the second straight day, the only run scored by Vermont came on a solo home run from J.P. Ramirez. Monday's home run, a line drive over the rightfield fence, came in the first inning and gave the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead.

The Renegades quickly tied the game in the second as Bennett David led off with a double and scored on a David Geneo one-out RBI double. Hudson Valley then took the lead on a two-out Brett Nommensen RBI single that scored Geneo with the eventual game-winning run.

Hudson Valley starter Kyle Lobstein allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts over four innings, while reliever Douglas Salinas tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. De Los Santos pitched the final 2 1/3 scoreless frames for his fourth save.

Gabe Cohen had two of the Renegades six doubles, while Nommensen and Burt Reynolds both had two hits for Hudson Valley (7-10). Both teams struggled all night with runners on base as Hudson Valley went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position, while the Lake Monsters were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-16 with runners on base.

Lake Monsters starter Mitchell Clegg gave up two runs on eight hits, the first time in 17 games this season that a Vermont starting pitcher had allowed more than four hits in a start. Reliever Gary Amato tossed three scoreless innings, while Sean Nicol had three of Vermont's five hits in the game.

The loss dropped Vermont (8-9) under the .500 mark as the Lake Monsters head to Stedler Division-leading Oneonta for a three-game series against the Tigers. Vermont returns home for a brief three-game homestand against the Lowell Spinners beginning on Friday night.
