Memphis Storms Back to Beat Z's 10-9
June 28, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
What started out as a pitcher's duel turned into a slugfest at Zephyr Field as the Memphis Redbirds beat the Zephyrs 10-9 Sunday night.
The two teams combined for one run on only four hits before the rain came in the bottom of the fourth inning, causing a 58-minute delay. Once the skies cleared, the offenses came to life. The Zephyrs scored six more runs in the fourth after the delay to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Zephyr starting pitcher Jarrett Santos cruised through the first four innings, allowing only one hit. But Santos got into trouble in the fifth inning, and ended up allowing three runs to cut the Zephyr lead down to 7-3.
The Z's got one run back in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back two-out doubles by Jai Miller and Justin Knoedler, but the bullpen could not hold on to the lead. On the night, the Zephyrs had six players that contributed multi-hit games, but it would not be enough.
Memphis stormed back for seven runs of their own in the top of the seventh off of Carlos Vasquez and Levale Speigner to take a 10-8 lead, and would go on to win 10-9. The deciding blow came on a two-run homer by Jon Jay, capping the seven-run seventh.
The third game of the series will take place Monday night as Clay Hensley (RHP) takes on Clayton Mortensen (RHP).
