Lawrence's Eight Strong Innings Not Enough as Beavers Lose

Portland Beavers News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Christian Colonel singled to left with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to give the Colorado Springs Sky Sox a 3-2 win over the Portland Beavers Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field.

With one out and the winning run 90 feet away, Colonel bounced a single over third baseman Craig Stansberry to bring home Matt Murton, who walked and advanced to third on Jeff Baker's single to left, as the Sky Sox (45-31) won their fifth straight game.

Baker and Colonel led the Sky Sox with two hits apiece.

The Beavers' runs came on Chad Huffman's long, two-run homer in the second inning off Sky Sox starter Alan Johnson. Stansberry added two singles for the Beavers (36-41), who fell a season-high 9 1/2 games behind the first-place Sky Sox in the PCL's Pacific North Division.

Matt Belisle (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for his first win with the Sky Sox this season.

Eulogio De La Cruz gave up one run on three hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings to fall to 0-3.

With a depleted bullpen, the Beavers got a much-needed effort from starter Brian Lawrence, who tossed eight strong innings, limiting the Sky Sox to two runs (1 earned) on seven hits and striking out five in his third start since signing with the club June 16.

Johnson gave the Sky Sox six solid innings, holding Portland to two runs on six hits.

After Drew Macias was hit by a pitch leading off the second, Huffman deposited the third pitch he saw from Johnson over the left-field wall to put the Beavers up 2-0.

The Sky Sox responded in the bottom of the third, rallying for a pair of runs with two outs in the inning. Mike McCoy singled and scored on a triple by Chris Frey, who then came home when Sean Kazmar misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Matt Miller.

The Sky Sox threatened in the eighth and ninth innings, getting a runner in scoring position with one out each time. But they could not capitalize, bouncing into a double play in the eighth and striking out and grounding out in the ninth against De La Cruz.

With one out in the 10th, De La Cruz walked Murton on five pitches. Then, after getting Baker in an 0-2 hole, he gave up a single to left that allowed Murton to advance to third. Following an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Mark Bellhorn, Colonel singled home the winning run.

The Beavers and Sky Sox meet again Monday night at 6:05 p.m. (Pacific)

NOTES: Mike Baxter, Macias and Kazmar all extended their hitting streaks to five games ... Val Pascucci went 1-for-4 and is batting .375 (3-for-8) with the Beavers after signing with the team Saturday.
