Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox returned home from the longest road trip of the season and endured a 1:46 rain delay before going on to thump the Portland Beavers 8-3 in front of 5,839 fans on Saturday evening at Security Service Field. Franklin Morales (2-2) picked up the win after giving just one run on seven hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four. The loss went to Beavers starter Will Inman (0-3) after he gave up eight runs, seven earned, on six hits and six walks in four innings.

Leading the way at the plate for the Sky Sox were Mike McCoy, Matt Murton and Matt Miller who each had three hits and accounted for all seven RBIs in the game for Colorado Springs.

The Sox got on the board early with two runs in the first plated on a fielding error by third baseman Craig Stansberry and a sacrifice fly from Murton. Murton later singled in McCoy in the third inning to make the score 3-0 before the Beavers cut the lead to 3-1 on a RBI single by Chad Huffman in the top of the fourth.

A four-run bottom of the fourth by the Sox would put the game out of reach however as McCoy singled in Chris Frey, Miller doubled home Eric Young Jr. and McCoy and Murton plated Miller on a single to right center. A Sky Sox insurance run came around to score in the fifth when McCoy delivered his third straight single in the game and drove in Yorvit Torrealba.

Ryan Speier turned in a perfect inning of relief work in the seventh as he spelled Morales. Franklin Nunez, making his first appearance since May 13, relieved Speier in the eighth and proceeded to give up two singles and a walk to load the bases before being lifted for Matt Belisle. Belisle gave up a two-run single to Huffman, who finished with three RBIs, but got out of the inning and stopped the bleeding before going on to finish off the ninth to secure the Sky Sox win.

Game two tomorrow afternoon will feature RH Alan Johnson (7-3, 6.17) for the Sox versus the Beavers' RH Brian Lawrence (1-1, 3.75). Game time is set for 1:05 PM.
