JackHammers Win in Gary

GARY, IN-LHP Brad Mumma (3-1) pitched seven and two-thirds innings of one-run baseball as both C Phil Avlas (1-5) and 1B Freddie Thon (1-5) each hit home runs to combine for a 7-1 Joliet JackHammers (6-15) win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (10-12) before 1,849 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped a four-game losing streak for Joliet.

The JackHammers got on the board in the 1st inning against Gary RHP Chris Jones (1-1). CF Adam Klein (2-5) popped out to third base. SS Kevin Rios (1-5) reached first base on a bunt single. C Phil Avlas (1-5) popped up to second base and 1B Freddie Thon (1-5) hit a two-run home run to give Joliet a 2-0 lead.

Joliet added single runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 5-0 lead. In the 4th inning, RF K.C. Herren (1-4) led off with a single. 2B Ryan Arcadia (0-2) popped out to second base. Herren moved to second base on a throwing error by Jones. CF Adam Klein (2-5) hit a double to score Herren for a 3-0 Joliet lead.

In the 5th inning, Avlas led off with a home run to left field to make it 4-0.

That would be all the support Mumma needed. He tossed seven and two-thirds innings. He walked one and struck out four men.

The JackHammers poured in three runs in the 8th inning to seal the victory. DH Tim Alberts (2-5) flied out to center field to lead off the inning. 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-1) was hit by a pitch and Herren grounded out to second base.

Pinckney, who moved to second base on the play, advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Arcadia followed with a walk to put runners at first and third base for LF Jamie McGraw (1-4), who responded with an RBI double to score Arcadia.

Klein ended the scoring with a two-run double to make it 7-0 Joliet.

The JackHammers return home for a one-game make-up against the Schaumburg Flyers at Silver Cross Field on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Flyers have not named a starting pitcher. The JackHammers will send RHP Rory Shortell (1-0, 3.97) to the hill. The JackHammers will offer special five dollar Box Seats to all Joliet residents for tomorrow's game.
