Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Frederick, MD- For the fourth time in 11 games and the second time in as many days, the Red Sox used a 5-run inning to their benefit, breaking open a 4-3 nailbiter in the eighth to wallop the Keys 9-3 and sweep the three game series as Harry Grove Stadium. One night after scoring five on two hits and five walks in an eighth inning that broke a 2-2 tie, the Sox used three hits and three walks to plate a quintet of runs in the same eighth inning off a Frederick bullpen that is happy to see Salem leave town.

From the bottom of the order, right-fielder Matt Sheely led the Sox with three hits, the latter of which came with the bases loaded in the eighth to drive in a pair. Sheely also stole two bases off the Keys pitching staff. Ryan Kalish and Jason Place each chipped in with two hits and two RBI to help guide Salem to victory.

Red Sox starter Dave McKae, making his debut after being signed on Friday, lasted three and two-thirds innings, yielding three runs on six hits in his first appearance in a Red Sox uniform. McKae had spent the past four seasons in the Giants organization, most recently with Double-A Connecticut, before being released at the end of spring training.

Derrick Loop replaced McKae with two outs in the fourth and combined with Josh Papelbon to blank the Keys the rest of the way, totaling five and a third scoreless innings. Loop earned the win while Papelbon picked up his first save.

Following Chris Vinyard's fielding error that allowed Che-Hsuan Lin reach to begin the game, the Sox scored three times in the first inning on RBIs from Kalish, Place, and Exposito. The Keys scored two in the second off McKae to narrow the gap, and Frederick knotted the score at three in the fourth when Caleb Joseph took McKae deep for his second homer of the year.

Things remained all square into the sixth, when Kris Negron's two-out fly to right field was misplayed by Billy Rowell. Negron advanced all the way to third on what was officially termed a triple. The ensuing batter, Sheely, grounded to second base, another play that should have ended the inning. But Matt Tucker's wild throw allowed Sheely to reach and Negron to score, putting the Sox on top 4-3. Two innings later, the Red Sox put the game away by batting around and scoring five more.

With the win, the Red Sox sweep a three-game series in Frederick for the first time since July 21-23, 2006. Back over the .500 mark at 6-5, Salem proceeds to Wilmington for a three game series beginning Monday evening at 6:35. Righthander Kyle Weiland makes his third start for Salem, while southpaw Danny Duffy is scheduled to throw for the Blue Rocks.
