Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery tied 1-1 with the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL2) Saturday afternoon at Blackbaud Stadium in their final pre-season exhibition match. After conceding a goal in the first half Charleston fought back and equalized with a late PK to earn the draw. The Battery opens its USL First Division season next Saturday night in Vancouver BC versus the Vancouver Whitecaps (10 PM, Sports Radio 1450 AM).

Wilmington's goal came from a long ball played over the top. Charleston defender Frankie Sanfilippo touched it back towards goalkeeper Dusty Hudock but Wilmington forward Chris Bagley intercepted the pass and flicked the ball into the goal.

The Battery equalizer came in the 90th minute after midfielder Derek Gaudette was brought down inside the box by the Wilmington goalkeeper. Defender Nelson Akwari took the kick and drilled the ball in off the inside of the left post.

Following next Saturday's season opener in Vancouver the Charleston Battery returns to Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday, April 18 to take on the Montreal Impact in the 2009 home opener (7:30 PM, $10 - $18, (843) 971-GOAL www.charlestonbattery.com).
