Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Finding A Wey

The United States Hockey League found Patrick Wey for it's Defensive Player of the Week award and some extra work. Wey is the Black Hawks' second defenseman to win a Player of the Week designation, joining Lee Moffie. The USHL has also tapped Wey to appear in the All-Star game on February 4th, due to injuries on the Eastern Division squad. The second-year defenseman will join teammates Craig Smith and Nick Larson at the All-Star game. Wey scored twice in the Hawks' win against Sioux City Saturday, including the game-winning goal. He has a point in seven consecutive appearances dating back to January 3rd.

In First In Third

Waterloo scored three goals in the third period on Saturday against Sioux City, pulling away for a 6-3 win. The Hawks have the USHL's most prolific offense in the final 20 minutes. In 34 games this season, the Black Hawks have scored 51 third period goals.

Smith Approaching Half-Century Mark

Based on his scoring pace, Craig Smith should reach the 50-point mark sometime this week. In 30 games this season, Smith has 19 goals and 29 assists for 48 points. In his first two seasons combined, the Black Hawk captain appeared in 103 games with 21 goals and 20 assists, a total of 41 points.

Five-on-Three Results

Waterloo killed off three five-on-three penalty situations last weekend. In total, the Black Hawks were shorthanded by two men for 2:24 without yielding a goal. This season, Waterloo has worked through 18 of 22 two-man disadvantages without allowing the opponent to capitalize. The last five-on-three goal against Waterloo was put in by Matt Donovan of the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders on January 10th.
