106 former QMJHL players still lacing up their skates at the University level
Published on October 9, 2008 under Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
BOUCHERVILLE, Thursday, October 9, 2008 - A recent analysis of Canadian University rosters in Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces shows that 106 former players are currently pursuing their education while playing hockey at the University level. Of note, twelve of the League's alumni are also earning degrees and playing time at the University of Ottawa in Ontario.
"More and more players are using the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as a stepping stone to Canadian Universities," said Robert Baker, the QMJHL Educational Advisor. "The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and its teams invest significant dollars to ensure the academic success of its players. Indeed, teams are responsible for covering all of their players' school-related expenses during their major junior internship. Moreover, approximately one hundred (100) former players benefit from the League's bursary program each year, which can yield up to $16,000 over four years - an annual investment of more than $360,000. These amounts will most certainly rise significantly over the next few years. What's more, the dollars spent do not only benefit those who continue playing hockey. If they meet the criteria underlined in our bursaries program, all of our former players are eligible to receive these grants regardless of the academic program they undertake."
Ãric L'Italien, a former Rouyn-Noranda Huskies winger, who is currently pursuing a Law degree at McGill while playing hockey for the Redmen, isn't surprised by the high number of QMJHL alumni involved in University hockey. "This certainly proves that the QMJHL is on the right track and that its bursary program is starting to pay the dividends that the League hoped it would," said L'Italien. "Having myself benefited from the crucial financial support of the program, which helped me pursue my studies at the next level, I hope to see it continue and evolve to help the next generation of young hockey players realize their dream of consolidating school with hockey."
