RoughRiders' Murphy Commits to Miami (Ohio)

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Cody Murphy has committed to Miami of Ohio, the RoughRiders announced today. Murphy is expected to begin his college career in the fall of 2010.

"We're very excited for Cody," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "He's a good young player who's going to have the chance to continue to develop in our league and then be a part of a top collegiate program."

Murphy, 17, is gearing up for his first season with the RoughRiders after being selected by the Riders in the third round of May's United States Hockey League Entry Draft with the twenty-seventh overall pick. While the Highwood, Illinois, native spent the bulk of last season with the Team Illinois midget program, Murphy also played two USHL games for the now defunct Ohio Junior Blue Jackets.

Murphy is just the latest RoughRider to commit to Miami. Seven former RoughRiders- Ray Eichenlaub, Billy Loupee, Gary Steffes, Tommy Wingels, Pat Cannone, Matt Tomassoni and Chris Wideman- currently play for the Red Hawks. An eighth- Alec Martinez- turned professional with the Los Angeles Kings organization after completing his junior season at M.U. last spring.

Murphy joins Greg Burke (New Hampshire), Jeff Costello (Notre Dame), Matt Donovan (Denver), Kyle Flanagan (St. Lawrence), Tyler Lehrke (Minnesota State-Mankato), Tobias Nilsson-Roos (Vermont), Nick Oddo (Nebraska-Omaha), Paul Phillips (Denver), Matt Tennyson (Western Michigan) and Scott Winkler (Colorado College) as the eleventh member of the 2008-09 RoughRiders to make a college commitment.

The Riders are in Sioux City today to open up the USHL Fall Classic preseason tournament against the expansion Fargo Force at the Tyson Events Center. Tomorrow morning at 10:00 the Riders will take to the ice at Tyson against the defending Clark Cup champion Omaha Lancers before heading to Sioux City's IBP Ice Center to wrap up their exhibition slate against the Tri-City Storm Saturday at 3:00PM.

The Riders will open their tenth anniversary regular season on October 4 at Indiana. They will play their home opener on Saturday, October 11 at 7:05PM against the arch rival Waterloo Black Hawks.

2008-09 season tickets are still available through the RoughRiders' business office (247-0340). Fans who purchase season tickets receive a host of benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.

In addition to full season tickets, the RoughRiders also offer the Flex Plan, which enables fans to purchase books of ten ticket vouchers that can be redeemed in any quantity for any regular season home game during normal box office hours.  Fans who purchase the flex plan receive a significant discount ($21 off game day ticket prices) and can still enjoy the games of their choice in the seats they want.
