D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (September 24, 2008) - D.C. United and its charitable arm, United for D.C., announced today the 2008-2009 United Reads program schedule. United Reads is a signature program created to encourage elementary school students in the greater Washington DC area to fall in love with reading. Now in its seventh year, United Reads will continue to partner with the Heart of America Foundation to provide two new books to each student during D.C. United player visits to each school. The opinions expressed in this release are those of the organization issuing it, and do not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of OurSports Central or its staff.
"United for D.C. is excited to continue emphasizing the importance of reading to elementary school students in Washington, DC," said United for D.C. Executive Director Sara Peterson. "The involvement of D.C. United players allows them to serve as great spokesmen for reading to the impressionable students."
The fall season is highlighted by a host of player appearances at participating schools. United Reads will be at six different elementary schools between September 29 and October 24. During the visits, each student will receive two new age-appropriate books to add to their at-home libraries. In addition, United Reads provides free access to learning materials and an annual reading challenge.
In addition to focusing on reading and literacy, United for D.C. will also be incorporating an additional partnership with the Banking on Our Future program, a national financial literacy program, pioneered by Operation HOPE Inc. Each fourth and fifth grader at Birney Elementary, Savoy Elementary and Smothers Elementary will be introduced to this program at the fall reading visits. A representative from Banking on Our Future will facilitate an exercise along with the help of D.C. United players.
