Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws put the wraps on their 2008 Golden Baseball League season Sunday at Nettleton Stadium, and in front on an announced crowd of over 3,000 on Fan Appreciation Night the visiting St. George Roadrunners slipped by Chico 4-2, salvaging the finale of the three-game weekend series and snapping the Outlaws winning streak at three.

It took just two batters for St. George to go out in front - Greg Lemon belted a one-out solo homer in the top of the 1st off Chico starter Berek Fasking that just got inside the right field foul pole, giving the Roadrunners a quick 1-0 lead. The Outlaws tied it up in the bottom of the 1st on back-to-back singles by Jesse Kovacs and Matt Ceriani and a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Todd Gossage. St. George went ahead to stay in the 3rd when Ryan Stevenson tripled with one out and scored on Lemon's RBI single to right, putting the Roadrunners up 2-1. In the 5th an Outlaws defensive miscue paved the way for a pair of St. George runs - Dustin Hicks led off the inning with a double and came home when Kyle Wells' single skipped by Gossage in right field...the error allowing Wells to advance to third, where he scored two batters later by a high-chop grounder by Stevenson....the Roadrunners going up 4-1.

St. George starter Monte Mansfield held Chico to just a run on three hits through the first six innings and reliever Anthony Pluta tossed a scoreless 7th, but in the 8th the Outlaws made it interesting, plating a run off John Segovia - with two out and a runner aboard, Julian Benavidez hit a high pop-up on the right side of the infield. First baseman Ivan Reyes was camped up the ball when second baseman Juan Serrano collided with him...the ball landing untouched for a single; Bryan Silverman scoring all the way from first to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Pinch-hitter Casey Garrison came to the plate representing the tying run, but Segovia got him to ground out to short to end the inning. Chico had one last chance to pull even in the bottom of the 9th, but Roadrunners reliever Claudio Galva slammed the door by striking out Chris Corso, Gabe Riley and pinch-hitter Eric Pringle to end it and give St. George the season-ending victory.

Mansfield (6-2 with St. George, 8-2 overall) got credit for the win with Galva posting his second save of the season...Fasking (2-5) took the loss. The Roadrunners had nine hits on the night, with Stevenson, Lemon and Dustin Hicks picking up two safeties apiece...the Outlaws were held to just four singles with no one posting a multi-hit game. With Sunday's loss, Chico finished its season with a 19-25 second half record and an overall mark of 34-52...St. George, who were knocked out of playoff contention by the Outlaws Saturday, finished the year 25-19 in the second half and 43-45 overall (a 20-win improvement from their previous season).

The Golden Baseball League playoffs begin Tuesday as Edmonton hosts Calgary in game one of the best-of-five North Division series, while Orange County travels to Long Beach for the opener of the best-of-five South Division series. The winners will square off in the best-of-five Golden Baseball League Championship Series beginning September 9th.
