International League Players Of The Week

Published on August 25, 2008 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that catcher Corky Miller and pitcher James Parr from the Richmond Braves have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from August 18-24. Richmond becomes just the second team this season to bring home both weekly awards, following Charlotte May 5-11 (Brad Eldred and Lance Broadway).

CORKY MILLER, Richmond Braves IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Veteran backstop Corky Miller found his hitting stroke this week, tying for the International League lead in home runs (3) while leading the circuit outright in hitting (.556), slugging (1.167) and on-base percentage (.619). Miller was optioned from Atlanta the first week of August. Entering play on Monday Miller was hitting just .136 with two home runs combined with Atlanta and Richmond, having collected more than one hit in a game just one time. This week alone he enjoyed two three-hit games and one four-hit affair, slugging three solo home runs along the way. The surge raised his average with Richmond to .356 in 13 games.

32-year-old Corky Miller is in his 11th professional season, and his second with the Braves. Last year Miller hit .210 with four homers and 25 RBI in 64 games with Richmond. He is a veteran of 127 Major League games with the Reds, Twins, Red Sox, and Braves. Miller is a native of Yucaipa, California.

JAMES PARR, Richmond Braves IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Right-hander James Parr has adapted quickly to Triple-A Baseball following his first promotion to the classification in mid-June. Parr was 8-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 18 games with Double-A Mississippi when he was assigned to Richmond for good in mid-July. This week he won back-to-back outings, tossing two two-hit, six-inning victories against the Toledo Mud Hens. Parr blanked the Mud Hens both times, striking out a total of nine with three walks. The second win came in a relief appearance, as the "starter" was rehabbing reliever Manny Acosta. Only one other hurler in the International League won two games this week, but Parr was the only one to do so with a 0.00 ERA. Parr has now won three consecutive outings dating back to August 12, improving his record to 4-3 with a 3.38 ERA in his first season at the Triple-A level. He has allowed just eight hits in his last 18.2 innings of work.

22-year-old James Parr is in his fifth year in the Braves organization. He was chosen by Atlanta in the 4th round of the 2004 draft out of high school. Including this season he has posted a career record of 42-30. Parr is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
