
Goldeyes shut down JackHammers

JOLIET, IL-Starting RHP Aaron Jackson (3-1) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on just two hits to give the Winnipeg Goldeyes a 10-1 win over the Joliet JackHammers before 2,626 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night. The loss snaps the JackHammers five-game winning streak.
The Goldeyes scored a run in the first inning thanks to some two-out hitting. Brent Metheny (3-5) reached base with a double and scored on a single by Tydus Meadows (1-5). The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead against Joliet starter Dustin Taylor.
Winnipeg scored an unearned run in the second inning to make it 2-0. Jamar Hill (1-4) reached first base on an error by JackHammers third baseman Mike Caruso. Hill went to second base on a wild pitch issued to Taylor. Jeff DeSmidt (1-5) hit an RBI single to score Hill for a 2-0 advantage.
The Goldeyes scored two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Metheny. Heath reached base on a fielder's choice and Metheny smacked his seventh home run of the season for a 4-0 Goldeyes lead.
Jackson shut down the JackHammers' high-powered offense on Saturday. The JackHammers got their first hit of the game in the third inning when Dennis Blackmon (1-3), Jr. led off the inning with a single.
In the Winnipeg sixth inning, Hill pulled a two-run home run over the left field wall for a 6-0 Goldeyes lead.
The JackHammers scored their lone run in the seventh inning. Freddie Thon (1-4) led off the inning and went to second base on a walk issued to Cory Harris (0-3). A wild pitch by Jackson moved both runners into scoring position. Joey Gomes (0-2) grounded out to score Thon for a 6-1 Goldeyes advantage.
In the ninth inning, the Goldeyes loaded the bases against JackHammers reliever Nick O'Brien. Max Poulin (1-4) led off the inning with a triple and Fehlandt Lentini (1-4) walked. Demetrius Heath (0-5) reached first base on a throwing error and Metheny smacked a grand- slam home run over the right field wall for a 10-1 Goldeyes lead.
Taylor suffered the loss for Joliet. He pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed six runs, (five earned runs), on seven hits. He walked only one man and struck out six.
Loose Gravel: Taylor made his first home start at Silver Cross Field in 2008. He started in Winnipeg on June 1 and allowed four runs, (three earned runs), on six hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched.
The JackHammers play their final game of the first half of the season on Sunday afternoon against Winnipeg at 2:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers will give away baseballs to the first 1,000 fans sponsored by People's First Bank. The JackHammers will also host the Guns and Hoses Annual Softball game between the Joliet Police and Fire Departmenst after the game. RHP Andrew Walker (2-3, 6.10) makes the start for Winnipeg against RHP Nate Sevier (3-2, 4.10) for Joliet.The first pitch is at 2:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 1:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
