Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - The long month of June is over for the Schaumburg Flyers, although it went out with a whimper instead of a bang. The Gary SouthShore RailCats played against Schaumburg on Sunday afternoon, and made sure to bring their bats. The visitors pounded out 14 runs on 17 hits, and spoiled the Flyers' 11-hit day with a 14-3 final score. It must have seemed like poetic justice to the RailCats that they put up 14 runs against a team they saw for the fourteenth time in June . . . and a team they also defeated for the twelfth time in that same month.

Just like in the first two games of this weekend series, Schaumburg (16-26) pulled out to an early lead. The first-inning rally was started on a leadoff double by SS Mark Haske (1-for-5, Run), followed by a walk to LF Jermaine Allensworth (0-for-3, Walk). Later in the inning, with one out and Haske on second, 3B Vince Harrison (1-for-2, RBI) singled to drive in his shortstop for the 1-0 lead.

Gary (24-17) took the lead they would never relinquish in the next half-inning. The top of the second saw Flyers starter Alex Rollin (0-1) hit one RailCat and walk another to put runners on first and second with nobody out. A sacrifice bunt and a strikeout later, Rollin seemingly had Gary RF John McCarthy (2-for-6, 2 RBI) on the ropes. That's when McCarthy hit a double to drive in the men on second and third for a 2-1 advantage. One batter later, RailCats 2B Eric McNamee (3-for-6, RBI) singled to drive in McCarthy for a 3-1 lead.

The Flyers would fight back for one more run in the bottom half of the second on a single from C Lance Koenig (1-for-4, RBI). That put the score within striking distance again at 3-2, but three more Gary runs in the top of the third extended their lead to 6-1. That same score held until the middle of the fourth, when a 49-minute rain delay halted the proceedings.

All the rain raised a question of whether the managers would let their starters continue after baseball would begin again. Manager Greg Tagert let Drew Dickinson (3-2) stay on through the end of the fifth frame, and it eventually earned his starter the win.

Dickinson's victory was all but assured after an offensive outburst in the top of the sixth. Gary scored four runs in that frame - punctuated by a three-run homer for DH Cristian Guerrero (5-for-6, 5 RBI, 4 R) - to take a 10-2 lead. Guerrero was an absolute monster on the day, hitting two singles, a double, and two homers against Schaumburg. The second long ball came in the top of the ninth inning, a solo shot hit off of Flyers reliever Justin Robinson to make the score 14-3. It was the sixth time in RailCats history that one of their hitters had a five-hit contest.

Schaumburg's final run came from the man who provided one of the bright spots in the lineup. In the bottom of the seventh inning, RF Dan Maycock (3-for-4, RBI) sent a towering solo shot over the wall in right field to make it 13-3 at that point. Maycock also hit a single and a double in the game, ending the game one triple away from the cycle. 1B Chris Gaskin (2-for-4, Run) also saw his hot hitting continue with a pair of singles, and DH Peanut Williams (2-for-4) got in on the act with two singles of his own.

Now with Gary in their rear-view mirror for more than a month, the Schaumburg Flyers will look ahead to Tuesday's home game with the Joliet JackHammers. The Flyers will send RHP Steve Shippey (2-4, 7.65) to the hill for the start, while Joliet has not yet named a starting pitcher.
